Celebrity Deaths and Mishaps:

Relationships between Names, Sounds,
and Letters

Nota Bene

Before proceeding further, I must make one statement. Thus far, the only endangered person with whom I had enough clues (from both Nostradamus and my own system of numerology) to make a positive identification in advance was Princess Diana. This is because Nostradamus actually named her. I have the name of only one other individual who will be in danger in the near future, but no definite date: singer/actress Madonna. Again as with Diana, Nostradamus provides her name -- base 7 numerology may provide the time.

It may be that other names are to be found in Nostradamus' prophesies that I will discover in good time. In the meantime there is only numerology, speculation based on historical trends, Nostradamus quatrains that are descriptive but do not provide a name, and these strange relationships between words and letters. The first such system that was developed was the "More" and "F" system.

The Origins of the "More" and "F" System

Those of us who remember the late 1960s and early 1970s well know that the period was marked by more than the Vietnam War, peace protests, and the rock and drug culture (although the last phenomenon listed partially contributed to the trend I am about to discuss). For those of us who were in adolescence it was our introduction to the shock of seeing celebrities we had grown to love, emulate, or simply had grown up with suddenly topple over one by one like a gruesome row of dominoes.

Certainly as young children or infants we had already been exposed -- whether or not we were aware of it -- to the earthshaking and tragic deaths of seemingly immortal men and women: James Dean, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, Jayne Mansfield, Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy. Jaded Beatles fans -- or perhaps the Beatles themselves -- subjected us to a Paul McCartney death scare. Then a crazed convict who claimed to be Christ and Satan roled into one selected the Beatles' most unusual album and used it to perpetrate the most heinous, tragic, and brutal murders of this century.

Still, through it all, seemingly great gaps of time passed.

It was late 1969 when a series of inexplicable young celebrity deaths began. Rolling Stones drummer Brian Jones was discovered drowned at the bottom of his swimming pool. He had taken LSD and confused the water he was sucking into his lungs for air. Judy Garland, Dorothy of Kansas, succumbed to depression and her addiction to sedatives and alcohol, disappearing into Oz forever. Summer came and began fading to autumn. Like two shots echoing in the night Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were no more, their music and voices stilled, leaving their brief legacy behind in short stacks of vinyl and a few reels of film.

1971 came and crawled slowly along in the manner that years tend to pass for the very young. The noise of graduation parties and post-graduation parties filled the air, competing with the sound of private fireworks displays. Not long after, like a disturbing flash of de ja vu, the news was reported: Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, was found dead in a bathtub by his girlfriend -- a drug overdose victim (friends insist it was a heart attack) at the incredibly young age of 27. Morrison, originally a poet before being persuaded to join his famed rock band, was the most prolific of the three rock superstars who had died in the space of only ten months.

It seemed to end there and then: death that shocked, death that disturbed, death that saddened finally had played its trump card. For popular culture, this appeared to be true for a short time. But for those who read and wrote poetry, once a major domain of popular culture until the suicide death of Sylvia Plath in 1963 and the posthumous release of the final collection of her poems Ariel in 1965, 1972 would bring tidings of another senseless death. John Berryman, the most outstanding black poet in America, took his own life. In the autumn of 1973 the world would be shocked yet again with the sudden, unexpected death of folk-rocker Jim Croce whose small plane crashed en route to a live engagement.

There is rarely a year that passes that does not present us with that last look, the final review of a life lived long and well and peacefully departed from or else snuffed out senselessly and prematurely by accident, suicide, murder, or a premature and terminal medical event. The individuals mentioned above were not the only victims of the 1969 - 1973 period. Inger Stevens, Duane Allman, and Sharon Tate were among others who had also passed on before their time.

The purpose of the above reminisence may have already been plainly stated enough. Most of the major celebrities of the 1969 - 1973 period had one thing in common: they each had a first or last name beginning with the letter "J." Brian Jones, Judy Garland, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin (a double "J"), Jim Morrison, John Berryman, Jim Croce. I am convinced that this was not a coincidence. I should also add that, because John Lennon "retired" near the end of this period, he apparently bought himself some extra time. Still, on December 8, 1980, the founder and leader of the Beatles was murdered by a psychotic fan named Mark David Chapman.

It did not occur to me until late 1998 that something similar had been occurring for nearly a year. Following the shocking deaths of Princess Diana and John Denver, comedian Chris Farley was found dead of an apparent heart attack. As the new year began, a pretty young woman was seen more and more on television, praying in her prison cell, arms upraised to heaven. Karla Faye Tucker would be the first woman executed in Texas since the Civil War. The entertainment world quaked in May with the announcement of the death of Frank Sinatra. Florence "FloJo" Joyner, a famous black Olympics superstar would die in September, asphyxiating in her sleep, just as rock star Jimi Hendrix had done 28 years earlier in the same month. Television and film actress Mary Frann was found dead shortly after, prescription drugs strewn about the room wherein her lifeless body lay. The following month the word was out: Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart was dying of anorexia. Not true, she retorted angrily. It was a month-long death-scare rumour that had fooled even seasoned journalists. Then, in November, actor Michael J. Fox revealed that he was suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

I believed I now knew what was coming. Farley, Faye, Frank, Florence, Frann, Flockhart, and Fox had one thing in common: the initial "F." If the 1969 - 1973 period was being replayed in 1997 - 2001, then not merely a sub-culture, but the world would be in for a major shock in July 1999. A young male, wth the letter 'F' figuring predominately in his initials, would die suddenly and unexpectedly. But who?

I agonised over this as I began to build my website, naively believing that thousands of visitors would be beating a path to my pages. Surely I would be able to pinpoint who was in danger. Surely the word would get out somehow to the right channels to prevent whatever was going to occur in July. But so many women had died tragically since Diana's death in August 1997. Could it be that it would be a female celebrity rather than a male who was in danger of dying in July 1999? As I began to scramble for other possible clues, I decided to include both genders in the prediction.

The most outstanding sound in Jim Morrison's name was the sound "More." Was there anyone around today with that sound predominating in their name? Then a list began to form in my mind: Alanis Morissette, Van Morrison, Demi Moore, etc. Also Jim Morrison's initials: J.M. Could that be a clue? Could the first name of the individual be Jim, James, John? John Mellencamp, perhaps? (I recently have learned that Mellencamp has a heart condition and is exercising, dieting, and taking prescriptions to keep his illness in check.) Without realising it, I had the first initial, "J," correct, and the second initial as well -- what I didn't know was that the "F&" would end up being a middle initial. I also began to wonder whether it was possible that "More" and "F" might work independently of each other -- each spawning a separate list of potential victims.

I joined GeoCities on May 7, 1999. On May 8, I began FTPing my web site. On May 10, I launched it. Then I began to promote it by submitting to search engines and directories. All the while this was going on, unbeknownst to me, television actress Dana Plato committed suicide in Moore, Oklahoma. It would be two weeks before I would learn of her death on May 8.

In June 1999, Star Trek lost its first major actor: DeForest Kelly ("Bones") died of stomach cancer. Then came that fateful day in July of which I had warned, remembering the death of Jim Morrison 28 years before. John F. Kennedy Jr. plummeted to his death in the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard. His wife, Carolyn Bessette and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette, died with him in the small plane they had been flying in to attend the wedding of JFK Jr.'s cousin.

Male and female would die.

It was quite a shock, especially with "JFK Jr." permanently affixed to the bottom of the television screen on CNN, a very famous person who I only marginally knew anything about. Yet, despite having the "what" and the "when" and even the originally-surmised gender of the person in media focus correct, I only had had fragments of the "who." I had never had any cause to consider the initial "K." The significance of that letter would not become apparent until it was much too late -- not only for JFK Jr., but for others as well.

Just as the "J" trend for the most part ended with Jim Morisson, I now suspect the "F" trend has also nearly finished with John F. Kennedy Jr. However, there may be one more major "F" at risk of death before his or her time.

Also, as with John Kennedy Jr. I sense tremendous danger for someone very famous with the name "John" in late 2001. It need not be a first name. Indeed, I am concerned that the individual in question may be singer/composer Elton John. I will be presenting my reasons for this on the "Early 21st Century: 2001" page soon.

As for "More" the potential victims continued to pile up until December 31, 1999, and were never anyone you might expect. For the exception of the mysterious death of English maven John Morgan (Morgan) in July 2000, I suspect its influence was largely a 1999 phenomenon.

"More" and "F" Presentation (1999)

THE INFLUENCE OF "F" AND "MORE" THUS FAR -- COINCIDENCE?

Prediction: The 'F' hurricane has formed. It is called Floyd. Watch it carefully. Also, throughout the season, state of Florida; Ft. Lauderdale; Fayetteville, NC; New cities (New York, New Bedford, etc.); East Coast beware.

September 16, 1999 -- North Carolina, as far west as Fayetteville, New Jersey, and New York City were most adversely affected by Floyd (along with Virginia and Pennsylvania).

October 15, 1999 -- The east coast of Florida was severely battered by the surprise hurricane Irene. Ft. Lauderdale was worst hit by flood and death to six by electrocution.

Prediction: In July 1999 a male or female celebrity may die suddenly and unexpectedly. He or she will be young. Base 7 suggests a set of potential initials: J.M., A.M., V.M., D.M. J.S., or any letter combined with the letter F.

July 16, 1999 -- Male and female celebrities JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, along with Bessette's sister, Lauren Bessette, died suddenly and unexpectedly after Kennedy's small plane took off from Fairfield, NJ and crash-dived into the ocean enroute to Martha's Vineyard. Services were held at the Church of St. Thomas More.

December 28, 1999 --WEST HILLS, California (CNN) -- Clayton Moore, the actor forever identified with the Lone Ranger character, died of a heart attack Tuesday morning at West Hills Hospital, about 20 miles north of Los Angeles. He was 85.

Moore played the Lone Ranger from 1949 to 1951, riding his trusty horse Silver and accompanied by his faithful American-Indian friend Tonto as the pair brought law and order to the Old West in every half-hour episode. When he sat out a contract dispute with the producers, actor John Hart took over the role for two years. But Moore completed the show's run until it was canceled in 1957.

Well, what can I say? I thought he was already dead.

Clayton Moore's days may have been numbered by the "More" influence, but there is no tragedy in a life lived long and well.

American Hostage Was Last Casualty of 'MORE'
Influence in 1999

Lone American Hostage of Indian Airline Hijacking, Jeanne Moore, Returns to US

Jeanne MooreJanuary 4, 2000 -- LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The sole American hostage on the hijacked Indian Airlines jet returned to California Tuesday. Jeanne Moore, 53, who was among the 155 passengers held on the plane for eight days, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport aboard a Lufthansa flight. Airline spokeswoman Maria Soler said Ms. Moore was tired and left the terminal with her son through an alternate route to meet her family outside the airport. She did not meet with reporters. Her Indian Airlines flight from Nepal to New Delhi was hijacked on Dec. 24, and the hostages were freed December 31. Ms. Moore's parents said they were anxious to see her. "I'll be so glad to see her, and love her a lot," her 85-year-old mother, Marie Redding, said Monday from her Burbank home. Her father, Harold Redding, 86, said: "She travels quite frequently and she wanted us to go along with her on this particular trip, but we couldn't get away. Our health couldn't stand the rigors." Ms. Moore lives in Bakersfield, where she teaches disabled children.

Despite a terrifying and potentially deadly experience in a drama played out for nearly a week, this story has a happy ending for one MORE at least.

Base 7 Repetitions

Sharon Stone looking sexy and beautiful at 50, but is the actress in danger of death?

Sharon Stone In Danger of Death, Due to Head or Neck Injury or Unknown Medical Crisis

July 7, 2008: In past emails I have discussed the possibility of applying the base 7 system to specific individuals or for people to be able to use it to chart out their their own specific life patterns.

Occasionally celebrities allow us to have insight concerning their own moments of danger, illnesses, injuries, accidents, suicide attempts, and the like. Sometimes we know part of the story of their lives simply by paying attention to events that happen to them when they happen and keeping the dates in mind. Other times they will discuss such events in interviews, filling us in on what we never knew.

Actress Sharon Stone is one of these. The following prediction is based on her own life experiences: Sharon Stone is in danger of death in September 2008 ... and it could even happen a few months before or a few months later.

On September 29, 2001, seven years ago, Sharon Stone walked into the emergency room suffering from what she thought was the most painful migraine headache she ever had had in her life. Stone was diagnosed with "subarachnoid hemorrhage," after initial tests showed minor bleeding on the brain apparently caused by a tiny aneurysm. The condition, which involves bleeding into the space between the brain and the arachnoid membrane, the middle of three membranes covering the brain, causes 5 to 10 percent of all strokes. According to doctors the condition can stem from a brain aneurysm, but even so in Sharon's case they were unable to pinpoint a cause and Stone remained hospitalised through the week for further testing. An aneurysm is a bulging area in a weakened wall of a blood vessel that can rupture and cause bleeding.

By October 4, 2001, Sharon's health was being reported as "hanging in the balance." A neurosurgeon expert at the hospital on that day informed the media that the risk of her dying would be significantly reduced if she got through the next two weeks without any major complications.

On October 9, 2001, Sharon was released from the hospital and was expected to make a full recovery with "no medical restrictions on her personal or professional activities." Doctors said they performed an endovascular coil embolisation procedure to eliminate blood flow through a vertebral artery dissection, which caused the hemorrhage she had suffered in September. When leaving the hospital, the actress said in a statement, "I would like to thank my fans for their love and support and the miraculous power of prayer. I am forever grateful."

Does anyone find it more than a little strange that so many reports are being published now about how Sharon Stone has been offered a free brain scan by the animal rights group Peta? This offer was made as a statement commenting about her seemingly heartless remarks about "bad karma" over Tibet being the reason for China's killer earthquake.

This is actually a very ominous event by itself, with much attention to be paid to the root meaning of the word "ominous" which is omen.

The fact that her head was involved in the near death experience she had in 2001, we must seriously consider the possibility that Sharon Stone may be in danger of an injury to her head or neck.

In 1971, at age 13, Stone was riding a horse and ran into a clothes line. The clothesline abraded her neck badly, ripping into parts of the skin. A long scar on her throat and neck remains visible to this day and has been the subject of much speculation.

In 1986, she was involved in a car crash that injured her sister but left Sharon unharmed. However, she was not so lucky in 1990. Shortly after the release of Total Recall, the actress had a bad car accident on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Immediately after the acident, she went home, not knowing she had just suffered a concussion (here the head comes into play again). She woke up almost completely paralysed, and ended up laying on the floor, crying, for three days. When she finally got to the hospital, she was diagnosed with the concussion, a dislocated shoulder and jaw, several broken ribs, and three compressed disks in her back.

In 1993, whilst in a convenience store to purchase food and other items, Sharon found herself suddenly in the midst of a holdup. One of the thieves held a gun to her head for about five tense minutes before making a getaway (into the arms of the law), leaving the actress shaken but unharmed.

Thus, we can see that Sharon Stone has a history of close calls. To make matters worse, most of the close calls are on seperate base 7 timelines (1971, 1978, 1985, 1992, 1999, and 2006 ... with the horseriding accident non-repeating; 1990, 1997, and 1984 with the auto crash non-repeating ... and the 2001 brain aneurysm which, of course, has yet to indicate any tendancy to repeat). However, the 1986 car accident does give us a repetition in 1993 seven years later with the holdup, but notice that in both of these instances Sharon was not harmed!

Even so, the accumulative evidence suggests head or neck injuries could occur due to four major incidents: the horseriding accident (1971), the concussion received in the car crash (1990), a gun being held to her head (1993), and the brain aneurysm (2001).

Regarding anything else of a current medical nature, it is known that Ms Stone suffers from diabetes and has been successfully treating it for some time. Perhaps it is this condition that requires some attention now on her part or on the part of her personal physician?

Conclusion: Sharon Stone is in danger of dying from a serious head or neck injury or from brain damage from an injury or a medical condition in September 2008 or therabouts. Of course her diabetes must also be closely monitored at this time as well.

2008 Name Sounds

NOTE ABOUT BLUE ALERT SYSTEM (3/11/03): Some of you may recall a few years back when I used "name blends" -- rhyming sounds and off-rhyme clues from part of one name to determine what the next name in the sequence might be (or later in the year). An example was the death of Layne Stahley and how "Layne" led to "Lynne" then "Linda" and the car crash death of Linda Lovelace which followed. I surmised that "Lace" in "Lovelace" might lead to a "Leese" then "Lisa" tragedy. The next day, Lisa Lopes of TLC was killed in a car crash.

Rather than create a whole other section on this page for name blends, I will instead highlight certain names in the lists below in light blue that I feel may be influenced by celebrity deaths that have occurred this year.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON EXCLUSIONS (1/23/04): We acknowledge the passing of dancer and actress Ann Miller, age 81, and note with great regret the passing of Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo), age 76. However, it is no longer the mission of this website to address the deaths of celebrities who are of advanced age or those who have had a long term health problem and are in their early elderly years. Such deaths are largely inevitable and often beyond any purposeful prediction. Also, the one and only applicable sound in Mr Keeshan's name ("eeeee") we now consider to be far too common to be remarkable or in any way useful for predictive purposes. Ergo, save for certain celebrities of advanced or elderly age who may appear on the prediction lists, we will no longer be publishing their obituaries and including comments.

It is, after all, premature death that we are most concerned about.

Prominent name sounds must also be present. "Ray", for example, is a prominent sound, "Ay", on the other hand, is not. This distinction will become more clear as we progress through the year.

ANSWER TO POSSIBLE QUESTION: Hey ... why all the chicks on here and hardly no MEN??? (6/9/07):

Sometimes that is the way it works out.

Charles Nelson Reilly was over 70. Singer Don Ho was over 70. Remember that this page is largely concerned with PREMATURE DEATH or disability/serious mishaps. There are some over-70 celebrities that appear on the lists, but only because I strongly feel they may be at some special risk at this time. Lloyd Alexander was a writer and I have not spread the celebrity base out so far as to include writers (save for a few well-known poets). So I do not report them as a rule if anything happens to one, even if his/her name conforms to a name sound. Alexander was also over 70. Gordon Scott was over 80. Tom Poston was over 70. Tommy Newsom was well over 70, almost 80 ... and so on. I won't continue listing the male celebs who were over 70 or 80 any further; you get the picture.

Al Hunter Ashton was a writer. Note what I said about not yet expanding the base to include authors, save for a few poets. Sci-fi writer Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. would have appeared on a list if I had thought of a base 7 section for this page in time. Instead, his death inspired the base 7 section. Bobby "Boris" Pickett, who sang the classic "Monster Mash", was 69. Luther Ingram, who sang "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right" (a song I really like), was also 69. That is close enough to 70 to not bother. Don't get me wrong .. I realise that 70 is "the new 60" and 60 is "the new 50" and 50 is "the new 40" and 40 is "the new 30" and 30 is "the new 20," but until everybody agrees on that, I will be forced to treat 70 and above the old fashioned way.

Directors like Benjamin "Bob" Clark also are not yet included in the base, unless they are extremely famous (like the late Stanley Kubrick or the recently deceased Robert Altman, but again the name sounds must match even for the very famous). The same is largely true about politicians. Comedian Richard Jeni and Boston frontman Brad Delp did not match any of the name sounds, so I could not report on their deaths.

There are a few males listed such as Denny Doherty of Mamas and the Papas fame. But the truth is, males have been very careful this year not to get into the kind of scrapes that the women on this page have gotten into. And most of the men who have died have been over 70.

It will be noted, however, that so far this year the total number of celebs, male and female, on this page is rather sparse anyway compared to past years. Both men and women have been more careful than in the past, it would appear. Especially since the death of Anna Nicole Smith in February.

Summary

UPDATE (7/31/08): My apologies for this very late debut of the Celebrity Deaths and Mishaps page for the year 2008! Due to a series of unrelated illnesses last year and this year, as well as a car crash in March of this year, progress on my entire website has been slowed considerably. Thus, because it is now the end of July 2008, this page will prove useless for prediction purposes for the expired period of January 1, 2008 through July 31, 2008 quite obviously. However, it will still prove invaluable as a predictive guide for the final five months of 2008 and we can of course look over what has happened in the last seven months and see what celebrities have already matched with the name sounds for this year.

Obviously, I will not be posting all of the celebrity deaths and mishaps that have occurred so far this year all at one time. They will be posted over the coming days and weeks, in no particular order. Of course, they must relate to the name sounds lists or the conditions in the base 7 section to appear on this page. Any name that is in orange on the predictions list (such as George Carlin) relates to the first seven months of 2008 and will not be considered a "prediction fulfilled" (since I cannot actually prove the name would have appeared on the list back in January). Meantime, beginning right now, anyone new for the remainder of the year who I feel relates to this page's conditions will be posted and, if the name is listed, will count as a prediction fulfilled.

So as not to waste more valuable time, I will skip doing a summary for 2007 for now. Perhaps I may feel like attending to that another time. If I do, it will appear on Celebrity Deaths and Mishaps Archives 15 at the appropriate location near the top part of the page.

Intruder beats, stabs TV news anchor Anne Pressly

October 20, 2008 - 0147 GMT (0947 HKT)

Anne Pressly, 26, was a popular morning news anchor at KATV in Little Rock, Arkansas.LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) -- A popular local TV anchorwoman who had a small part in the Bush biopic "W" was in critical condition Monday after being beaten in her home. Police questioned whether she could have been targeted.

Anne Pressly, 26, is a popular morning news anchor at KATV in Little Rock, Arkansas.

KATV anchor Anne Pressly, 26, was found about 4:30 a.m. Monday -- a half-hour before she was due to appear on the station's "Daybreak" program. Pressly's mother went to the anchorwoman's house when she didn't answer a wake-up call, Little Rock police spokeswoman Cassandra Davis said.

Davis said investigators are talking to Pressly's co-workers to determine whether she "has had any problems." Davis said Pressly's purse was gone and that robbery was among the possible motives being explored. Davis would not discuss specifics of what the investigation revealed.

In a statement, KATV president and general manager Dale Nicholson said the anchor "is a person who simply lights up the room, by just walking in. "The KATV family is having to deal with a personal crisis in our lives with the senseless brutality last night to one of our Daybreak anchors, Anne Pressly," Nicholson said. "I know her viewers will join her family as well as the KATV family in praying for a speedy recovery for Anne, who means so much to all of our staff."

Pressly was found unresponsive in her bed and a police report said she was bleeding from her head. Davis said Pressly was in critical condition at an hospital. Davis said Pressly was stabbed, but KATV cited investigators later in reporting that all of her injuries were from being beaten in the head and upper body.

Pressly appeared briefly in Oliver Stone's new movie about President Bush that opened over the weekend. She portrays a conservative commentator who speaks favorably of President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" event on an aircraft carrier shortly after the start of the Iraq war. She won the role after being noticed by the casting director when she went to Shreveport, La., where the movie was filmed, to work on a story about it and the city's film industry.

Spokeswoman Kate Hubin for the film company Lionsgate confirmed Pressly's role but declined to comment further.

KATV's Web site notes that Pressly's most notable interview was with Vice President Dick Cheney. Traveling through an Arkansas town, she found the highway blocked in front of a hunting goods store because Cheney was inside. Pressly asked for an interview, which she conducted on the ammunition aisle. Early Monday afternoon, a man answering a phone number for Pressly's mother, Patricia Cannady, said the family had no comment.

Arkansas TV anchor Anne Pressly dies days after attack

October 26, 2008

The murders of Anne Pressly and student president of NCU Eve Carson earlier this year are remarkably similar.(CNN) -- CNN affiliate KATV in Little Rock, Arkansas, announced Saturday evening that its morning anchorwoman, Anne Pressly, died from injuries sustained in an assault. Pressly, 26, was found beaten early Monday at her home. She was hospitalized and sedated.

Pressly's parents released a statement saying they were "with her in her last moments." They also asked for "the privacy we need at this very difficult time," KATV reported.

Police said Pressly was apparently not targeted but was attacked during the course of a burglary. Her purse was missing.

Pressly was beaten around the head, face and neck.

She had been unable to communicate with her family or police while sedated in the intensive care unit.

The anchor's death came only a day after a doctor said he was encouraged by her recovery. Dr. Clifton R. Johnson said Friday that swelling in Pressly's brain had gone down since she was hospitalized and that doctors had slowly been reducing her sedative dosages.

Police have yet to identify a suspect, though detectives have combed the area around Pressly's home in the Heights neighborhood, a mix of bungalows and mansions near the Little Rock Country Club. News reports have said detectives found evidence that Pressly's credit card was used Monday at a gas station a few miles from her home.

On Saturday, KATV opened its nightly news cast with a seven-minute segment devoted to Pressly. Anchor Pamela Smith told viewers that Pressly's family agreed to have their daughter be an organ donor. Smith's voice hitched as she read condolences sent into the station, her eyes red. "She owned every room she was in, not because she demanded our attention, but because we willingly gave it to her," Smith said. "We all felt a little better, a little more alive just being near her.

"Life was easy for Anne Pressly. But it is her death that is so very hard for all of us."

A reward fund KATV set up to help find the killer or killers has reached $30,000, the station reported on its Web site Saturday night.

No funeral arrangements were immediately announced.

Pressly had a brief role as a TV commentator in Oliver Stone's film "W.," released in theaters earlier in October.

COMMENTS (11/6/08): I have a very strange feeling about this murder, a sort of de ja vu. The cruel death of Anne Pressly is all to reminiscent of the student nurse murders of Eve Carson and Lauren Burk committed earlier this year on virtually the same night only a few hours apart. There is even an eerie resemblance between Eve Carson and Anne Pressly. Carson and Burk were the second and third in a series of nursing/medical student murders around the US which later included four more young women studying in that same field. Out of the seven, four murders remain unsolved ... Burk and Carson's killers were caught and are now facing trial and the death penalty. Anne Pressly's murderer is still iunknown and at large at this writing.

Eve Carson, age 22, NCU student presidentI realise that Anne Pressly was not in the medical field, but she was of the same age and appearance of Eve Carson, 22, who was the most popular of the student victims thus far as she was the college president at North Carolina University, and even shared her ability to light up her surroundings with her warm personality ... and she was likewise killed during the commission of a robbery.

As there are also three other university student murders, one an exchange student, none in the medical/nursing field however, but nevertheless unsolved ... the total nationwide is now seven student murders unsolved, and three solved, with the killer or killers of the seven unsolved cases still on the loose.

The question: has the nationwide trend now jumped from the most popular and locally "famous" of seven murdered female students to a local television news celebrity and budding actress? Are more local female celebrities in danger now? If another leap is made in the trend before the end of the year or early next year, will the victim be a famous blonde actress????

I should also add that Anne Pressly was also a "last name" match for Priscilla Presley and Jaime Pressly, listed above. Two names have been coded blue due to similarities.

Award-winning comedian George Carlin dies -- Carlin died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said

June 23, 2008

Comedian George Carlin: new material any time soon?LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Comedian-actor George Carlin, known for his raunchy but insightful humor, died of heart failure Sunday in Los Angeles, his publicist said. He was 71.

Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Health Center on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT, The Associated Press reported. Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.

"He was a genius and I will miss him dearly," Jack Burns, who was the other half of a comedy duo with Carlin in the early 1960s, told the AP.

Carlin was best known for his routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television," which appeared in 1972's "Class Clown" album. When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace, the AP reported.

The comedy sketch prompted a landmark indecency case after WBAI-FM radio aired it in 1973.

The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court where the justices ruled on a 5-to-4 vote that the sketch was "indecent but not obscene," giving the FCC broad leeway to determine what constituted indecency on the airwaves. "So my name is a footnote in American legal history, which I'm perversely kind of proud of," Carlin said. "In the context of that era, it was daring."

"It just sounds like a very self-serving kind of word. I don't want to go around describing myself as a 'groundbreaker' or a 'difference-maker' because I'm not and I wasn't," he said. "But I contributed to people who were saying things that weren't supposed to be said."

Carlin, who was also an author, was slated to receive the 2008 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in November. "In his length career as a comedian, writer, and actor, George Carlin has not only made us laugh, but he makes us think," Stephen Schwarzman, Kennedy Center chairman, said in a statement. "His influence on the next generation of comics has been far-reaching."

In a typical wry response, Carlin said: "Thank you Mr. Twain. Have your people call my people."

Carlin hosted the first broadcast of "Saturday Night Live" in October 1975. He played the character of Mr. Conductor on the PBS series "Shining Time Station" and starred in more than a dozen HBO specials. Carlin was also a regular on The Tonight Show.

He produced 23 comedy albums, 14 HBO specials, three books, a couple of TV shows and appeared in several movies, from his own comedy specials to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" in 1989 -- a testament to his range from cerebral satire and cultural commentary to downright silliness (and sometimes hitting all points in one stroke), the AP reported.

"Why do they lock gas station bathrooms?" he once mused. "Are they afraid someone will clean them?" He won four Grammy Awards, each for best spoken comedy album, and was nominated for five Emmy awards, according to AP.

COMMENTS (7/31/08): This is sure turning out to be a bad year for jokers. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when George Carlin's death was being reported on the television. Seeing his recent appearance on HBO, I could see no indication the man was either ill or in some way not long for this world. His many video performances continue to be aired, as though nothing at all has happened. I guess it will start hitting home when I begin to notice he's run out of new material.

Jennifer Hudson identifies bodies of shot mother and brother as FBI called in to hunt for missing nephew, 7

Daily Mail

10:28 PM on 25th October 2008

Devastation: Jennifer [L] and her mother Darnell [R], pictured at the 2007 Oscars, who has been shot dead at her Chicago homeThe FBI have been called in to hunt for the seven-year-old nephew of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson, a day after her mother and brother were found with multiple gunshot wounds at her Chicago home.

Hudson's brother-in-law William Balfour is currently being questioned by police as a suspect, but he has not been charged. He was at first thought to have kidnapped his son Julian King, but the seven-year-old was not with him when he was found.Detectives said the double murder was a 'domestic incident' that had got horribly out of control.

Singer-actress Hudson, who appeared in Dreamgirls and the film version of Sex And The City, flew back to her home-town of Chicago from Florida.

She visited the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office overnight with other family members to identify the bodies of her mother and brother, according to the office. The 27-year-old has cancelled her trip to Japan on Monday, where she was promoting her new album.

A statement from her representative Lisa Kasteler said: 'We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson. No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.'

Neighbours reported hearing gunshots at 9am on Friday.

Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson said Hudson's cousin entered the home around 3pm and after finding Darnell on the living room floor left to fetch help. Officers then found Hudson's mechanic brother Jason, 29, dead in the bedroom, Patterson said. There was no sign of forced entry.Darnell, 57, was shot in the head while Jason was shot in the chest. At least one of the victims had 'defensive wounds' police said. Hudson's sister bus driver Julia reported her son as missing after work on Friday.

Mr Payton Balfour married Julia in 2006, but his mother Michele Davis Balfour told the Chicago Sun-Times they have been experiencing problems in the last few weeks and were separated. 'I didn't raise no murderer,' Michele Balfour insisted. 'He was not a child abductor. They have the wrong person.' Police confirmed they were speaking to 'a number of suspects' besides Balfour.

Tragic: Hudson's brother Jason (left) was found dead in his bedroom, while her nephew Julian King (right) is missing.

Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Balfour, 27, is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle. Hudson, whose father Samuel Simpson died when she was a teenager, has described herself as very close to her family.

In a recent interview she said her family, which included older siblings Julia and Jason, helped keep her grounded. She said: 'My faith in God and my family, they're very realistic and very normal, they're not into the whole limelight kind of thing, so when I go home to Chicago that's just another place that's home. 'I stand in line with everybody else, or, when I go home to my mom I'm just Jennifer, (so she says), "You get up and you take care of your own stuff." 'And I love that; I don't like when people tell you everything you want to hear, I want to hear the truth, you know what I mean.'

Hudson shot to fame as a contestant on American Idol in 2004. Last year, she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her critically-acclaimed performance as Effie White in Dreamgirls, co-starring Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy. Following her performance as Carrie Bradshaw's assistant Louise in the Sex And The City Movie earlier this year, Hudson released her debut solo album three weeks ago. Her single Spotlight is currently No.12 in the UK singles charts. Last month, Hudson announced her engagement to boyfriend David Otunga.

COMMENTS (11/6/08): Everyone around Jennifer Hudson appears to be dead or in peril. A new report has also come out stating that Jennifer Hudson was actually supposed to be the target and something went wrong. Technically Jennifer Hudson was also a "last name" match for actress Kate Hudson, listed above. Four names have been coded blue due to similarities.

Mark Priestley dead, co-star Jolene Anderson injured

The Daily Telegraph

August 28, 2008 02:39pm

Mark Priestley (Jolene Anderson inset)DETAILS of All Saints actor Mark Priestley's tragic death have finally emerged today. The much-loved actor, 32, who played nurse Dan Goldman, was found dead on an awning of the Myer store at Pitt St, on the corner of Market St, Sydney, at 2pm yesterday (Wednesday).

Police sources said the 32-year-old jumped from the Swissotel on the corner of Market and George Streets and was killed instantly. There are unconfirmed reports he plunged from a 22nd-floor room.

The incident caused chaos in the middle of the city, with emergency crews bringing in a cherry picker to help retrieve the body and to examine the crime scene.

A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious. A coroner would examine the circumstances of his death.

He checked into the hotel yesterday morning, Swissotel staff confirmed. He was alone when he checked in but it is unknown if he had any company with him at the time he plunged.

Members of the public raised the alarm.

Swissotel marketing manager Georgina Williams said hotel staff were working with police.

“It’s terribly sad. I am a fan of the show myself.’’

Sources have suggested the Perth-born star was grappling depression.

Meanwhile it has emerged that his co-star Jolene Anderson - who plays Goldman's love interest Erica Templeton - was caught in a car crash yesterday. Anderson is recovering but was left "in shock" when informed of Priestley's death today.

Cast members of the hit Channel Seven medical drama are in mourning after the news was broken today.

Mark Priestley's closest acting colleagues today paid tribute to a remarkable actor and kind soul."It's so sad. He has some quiet from the pain now. He was a gift," said close friend and All saints co-star Wil Traval.

"Mark the actor was intuitive, and graced every scene in which he appeared with touch of whimsical genius that only he could apply.

"Mark the man was a shining light. A unique personality. I worked with him on stage and on screen, and will miss him more than I can say right now." said All Saints co-star John Waters.

"In each and every moment Mark spent with us on All Saints he gave his all. He could bring light, laughter and love to everything he did. We treasure every memory and experience. To have worked with him was a privilege. To have been able to call him a friend was a priceless gift," said the cast All Saints.

"Mark Priestley - a beautiful man of such sensitivity, genorosity, humour and talent. He was respected and admired by the industry in a way that few artists are. It's just too sad to think about what his family and close friends are going through right now," said Lisa Mann, Priestley's agent.

"Mark has created a wonderful spirited character whose truth resonates throughout our show. His work as an actor is always inventive and his performance in All Saints is a joy to watch. I have lost a major colourful character and a friend of many years," said Bill Hughes, series producer, All Saints.

"Mark was a remarkable person, one of those people you can't help but love. He could be quite a handful at times, but he had the most extraordinary combination of very deft comic touch and great emotional depth," said John Howard, All Saints co-star.

The Seven Network also released the following statement: "Mark Priestley was a tremendous young person – loved and respected by his fellow All Saints cast members and crew.

"After graduating from NIDA in 1999, Mark took on key roles in series such as Changi, The Secret Life Of Us and Blue Heelers before joining the cast of All Saints in 2004 as Nurse Dan Goldman. He also worked with the famed Bell Shakespeare Company and the Sydney Theatre Company."

Seven’s Director of Programming and Production Tim Worner said: "Mark was such a brilliant artist. His work on stage and screen was admired by everybody who knew him. His death is such a sad loss. We at Channel Seven will miss his energy and smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark’s family and friends'.”

COMMENTS (9/3/08): Technically Mark Priestley was a "last name" match for actor Jason Priestley, listed above. This is really quite crazy ... on the nearly 21st anniversary (3 x 7) of actress Elizabeth Hartman's (see below) suicide by falling from her 5th floor apartment window, supermodel Ruslana Korshunova goes one better by jumping from a 9th floor apartment balcony. Thus far, the record has been held by singer Susannah McCorkle who took a swan dive off her 16th storey balcony seven years ago. So where's the water when you need it? Mark Priestley took the high board at 22 floors! No amount of water would have saved him.

Meantime there is Mark's All Saints co-star, Jolene Anderson, who crashed hard, but survived:

Mark Priestley 'love' Jolene Anderson injured in smash

The Daily Telegraph

August 28, 2008 11:07amJolene Anderson

AS Sydney reels at the news of All Saints actor Mark Priestley's death, it has emerged that his co-star Jolene Anderson - who played his on-screen lover - has been injured in a car smash.

The Logie nominee is nurse Erica Templeton in the Seven series. Her character married Priestley's character, nurse Dan Goldman, after an on-off relationship, in Tuesday's episode - causing a ratings spike in Sydney.

Anderson was returning home from a matinee performance of Tell Me On A Sunday - her new musical - when her vehicle was sttruck by a truck. She is understood to have sustained an arm injury, which has required a sling. An understudy was forced to cover for the actress in last night's stage musical at the Seymour Centre.

A staffer at Kookaburra Theatre, which produces the show, was unable to comment on when Anderson is expected to return to her leading lady role.

She has been informed of the Priestley tragedy today and is said to be "in shock" but has no comment to make, a spokesman said.

Paul Newman dies at 83

September 27, 2008

Paul Newman(CNN) -- Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.

Paul Newman's handsome face and solid acting made him a popular and respected film star. He died Friday, according to spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic.

Newman attained stardom in the 1950s and never lost the movie-star aura, appearing in such classic films as "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Exodus," "The Hustler," "Cool Hand Luke," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sting" and "The Verdict." He finally won an Oscar in 1986 -- on his eighth try -- for "The Color of Money," a sequel to "The Hustler."

He later received two more Oscar nominations. Among his other awards was the Motion Picture Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

"Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness," said Robert Forrester, vice chairman of the actor's Newman's Own Foundation. "His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much."

He was often willing to make fun of himself. Early in his career he was mistaken for fellow Method actor Marlon Brando; Newman obligingly signed autographs, "Best wishes, Marlon Brando."

Newman was a Method-trained actor who blazed his own career trail and didn't shy away from risky roles -- inside and outside films. A portrayal as a race-car driver in 1969's "Winning" led to his actual competition in races; at 70, he participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona and he was still racing at age 80.

He stumped for liberal causes, including Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential candidacy, and earned a spot on Richard Nixon's enemies list -- "the highest single honor I've ever received," he said.

In 1982, Newman and his friend A.E. Hotchner founded Newman's Own, a food company that produced food ranging from pasta sauces to salad dressing to chocolate chip cookies. "The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films," Newman once wryly noted.

To date, the company -- which donates all profits to charities such as Newman's Hole in the Wall camps -- has given away more than $200 million. Newman established the camp to benefit gravely ill children. "He saw the camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back and raise a little hell," Forrester said. Today, there are 11 Hole in the Wall camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Some 135,000 children have attended the camps -- free of charge.

The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps "is part of his living legacy, and for that we remain forever grateful," the association said in a statement. "We are greatly saddened by his passing. His leadership and spirit can never be replaced. But he has left us strong and confident."

Newman was half of one of the most successful showbiz marriages -- to Joanne Woodward, whom he married in 1958. He observed that just because he was a sex symbol there was no reason to commit adultery. "Why would I go out for a hamburger when [I] have steak at home?" he asked.

Newman's daughters said described him as a devoted husband, a loving father, an adoring grandfather and a dedicated philanthropist. "Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special," they said in a statement. "Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity. "Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words: 'It's been a privilege to be here.'"

The statement requested privacy for Newman's family.

CNN's Larry King, who interviewed Newman through the years, said he greatly admired the actor. "He lived a long and terrific life," King said Saturday morning. "He was much appreciated. Did some theater, graduated Yale. Long marriage to Joanne Woodward. One of those showbiz rarities."

Brilliant chess master, world-class eccentric Bobby Fischer dies

January 18, 2008

Today world reknown chess champion Bobby Fischer [R] lost the final match against his opponent, the Grim Reaper [L]

Today world reknown chess champion Bobby Fischer [R] lost the final match against his opponent, the Grim Reaper [L]

(CNN) -- Chess master Bobby Fischer, one of the greatest chess players in history, has died, a spokesman for the World Chess Federation confirmed to CNN Friday. He was 64.

No cause of death was given.

Fischer became the first American world chess champion when he defeated Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a legendary encounter during the Cold War in 1972. Former Russian chess champion Garry Kasparov said Fischer would be remembered as "the pioneer, some would say the founder, of professional chess" and called his death "very sad news."

According to media reports in Iceland, Fischer died at a hospital in the capital, Reykjavik. He moved to Iceland after being granted citizenship in 2005.

Fischer became almost as famous for his personality quirks and his renegade behavior as for his brilliance at chess. He learned to play as a child in Brooklyn, New York, and quickly became a prodigy. He was only 15 when he reached the level of grand master in August, 1958.

His memorable and tumultuous defeat of Spassky in 21 games highlighted his eccentricity. He forfeited the second game of the contest after he refused to play on, complaining that the presence of cameras was distracting him. The match was then moved to a back room. Some suspected that Fischer's sometimes bizarre behavior throughout the match was intended to unnerve the highly disciplined Spassky.

Fischer never defended his crown, refusing a 1975 match against Anatoly Karpov, another Soviet. The WCF awarded the title to Karpov and Fischer dropped from sight for nearly two decades.

In 1992, he resurfaced to play Spassky in a rematch in Belgrade, a move that defied U.S. sanctions against the former Yugoslavia. He won the chess match and the prize money of $3.5 million, but spent the next decade as a reclusive and somewhat mysterious figure who was regarded as a fugitive by American authorities.

"He was truly a great player, one of the best there has ever been. It is a sad loss to the world of chess," said Gerry Walsh, the head of the English branch of the WCF. He had been ill for some time, Walsh said.

Not one to be a poor loser, Fischer nonetheless insisted he would continue playing chess in his spare time "as conditions permit""Fischer was a source of inspiration for all young players," said Kasparov, who said he would be remembered for his efforts to improve conditions for fellow professionals in the game and as a "warrior" on the chessboard. He added that Fischer's early retirement was a great loss to chess as he retreated into what Kasparov termed "his mental self-exile."

In recent years, Fischer became better known for his outspoken criticism of the United States. Interviewed by a Philippines radio station hours after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he allegedly called reports of a plane hitting the Pentagon "wonderful news" and said American foreign policy had provoked the attacks.

He also become known for virulent anti-Semitism, even though his mother was Jewish.

In 2002, Atlantic magazine reported that during a Manila radio broadcast he described his enemies as "Jews, secret Jews, or CIA rats who work for the Jews."

"The tragedy is that he left this world too early, and his extravagant life and scandalous statements did not contribute to the popularity of chess," former champion Kasparov told The Associated Press.

Fischer was arrested in 2004 at Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan, for traveling on a U.S. passport that was revoked after the 1992 Belgrade match. Japan detained him for nine months while he fought deportation to the United States.

In March 2005 Iceland invited Fischer to live there. Japan released him, and he promptly renounced his U.S. citizenship and became a citizen and resident of Iceland.

According to the syndicated television newsmagazine "Extra," a representative of the actress announced late Saturday Aug. 2, 2008 Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. (AP Photo/Nick Ut, file)09:16 GMT, Sunday, 3 August 2008 10:16 UK

US actress Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer, according to her publicist. Ame Van Iden said: "The cancer is not life threatening. She is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery."

The 36-year-old is best known for her role as Kelly Bundy in the long-running US sitcom Married with Children. Last month she was nominated for an Emmy award for her current role as an amnesiac in TV comedy Samantha Who? Applegate also received a Golden Globe nomination for the show, in which she plays a woman who awakens from an eight-day coma remembering nothing about her past.

Telethon

The actress, whose films include Anchorman and The Sweetest Thing, is scheduled to appear next month on a TV fund-raiser in aid of cancer research. Meryl Streep, Jennifer Aniston and Charlize Theron will also appear on the telethon, to be aired simultaneously on US networks CBS, NBC and ABC.

Applegate played Aniston's sister in two episodes of Friends, for which she won an Emmy for best guest appearance.

Applegate's publicist said she had benefited from early detection through an MRI ordered by her doctor.

COMMENTS (8/4/08): Christina Appelegate is named in the prediction list above ... quite prominently, I might add. If this was 1973, her prognosis would not be good at all.

Pop star Christie Allen dies

Herald Sun

August 13, 2008 07:33pm

Christie AllenAustralian singer Christie Allen, one of the pop sensations of the Countdown era, has died following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Her death, at her home in country Western Australia early yesterday, was announced in a statement by her former promoter, Mushroom Records founder Michael Gudinski.

Born in Britain in 1954, Allen shifted to Perth with her family and was signed to Mushroom Records by Gudinski in the late 1970s.

She had three top 20 singles in the Australian charts in 1979 and 1980 - Falling In Love, Goosebumps and He's My Number One - and followed up with a gold album, Magic Rhythm. Goosebumps and He's My Number One were Mushroom's two highest selling singles at the time, and Allen was voted the most popular female singer at the Countdown Awards.

Goosebumps and He's My Number One were Mushroom's two highest selling singles at the time, and Allen was voted the most popular female singer at the Countdown Awards in 1979 and 1980. But her career declined following a long illness and several unsuccessful singles in the 1980s.

Allen had resurrected her music career by the 1990s, singing with country music bands, before Gudinski sought her out via an appeal on national radio to perform at a concert for the 25th anniversary of Mushroom Records in 1998. She retired following that performance, before a huge crowd at the MCG on November 14 that year.

Allen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March this year and remained at home with her husband Mark, daughter Christa Lea and relatives caring for her.

COMMENTS (9/3/08): This is one of a series of tragic deaths from down under to occur in recent weeks. Note that the name, Christie Allen, just happens to have all the name sounds. There continues to be a higher than normal death rate from "natural causes" for people in their 50s I see. Not terribly reassuring.

He was 58. Tim Russert established himself as the face of NBC's political journalism as host of "Meet the Press."

The network said the award-winning journalist collapsed at work Friday. He was taken to Washington's Sibley Memorial Hospital, where he died, the hospital confirmed. Colleague and former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw broke the news on the network Friday shortly after 3:40 p.m.

Russert had just returned from a family vacation in Italy with his wife, journalist Maureen Orth, and son, Luke, to celebrate his graduation from Boston College, Brokaw said. "I think I can invoke personal privilege and say this news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice," Brokaw said Friday.

"He will be missed as he was loved -- greatly."

Friends and colleagues remembered Russert on Friday not only as one of the country's most respected and influential political journalists, but also as a friend, a devout Catholic and an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his home team, the Buffalo Bills. "I just loved the guy. He had this enthusiasm about all of the things that life brings to you," said James Carville, who often attended Washington National games with Russert. "My wife and I are in a complete state of utter shock."

Actor Heath Ledger dies at 28

January 22, 2008

The late Heath Ledger dominates Dark Knight as the JokerNEW YORK (CNN) -- Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said. Heath Ledger was unresponsive when a housekeeper found him in a Manhattan apartment.

The Academy Award nominated actor was 28.

Ledger was found naked and unresponsive, facedown on the floor at the foot of his bed by a housekeeper trying to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse, said police spokesman Paul Browne. "Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," he told CNN."This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Browne later told reporters some prescription medications were found in the room, including sleeping pills. But he stressed police have made no determination of the cause of Ledger's death -- that would be done by the medical examiner. He said the pills were not "scattered about." No note was found and there was no indication of foul play, Browne said.

Ledger was found at about 3 p.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel about 3:30 p.m. A crowd of onlookers, photographers and reporters gathered outside the apartment building after news of Ledger's death was reported. Police officers were guarding the doors.

Browne said he did not know how long Ledger had been renting the apartment, which he said took up the entire fourth floor.

An autopsy would be conducted on Wednesday, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office.

Ledger was born in Perth, Australia, and named Heathcliff Andrew after the main characters of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights." He began acting at a local theater as a child. Ledger's first American film was the teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You" in 1999, and he immediately attracted attention from Hollywood. He passed up several scripts before taking a role in the Revolutionary War drama "The Patriot" in 2000 and "A Knight's Tale" in 2001. He also played a supporting role in "Monster's Ball," among other films.

"In a way I was spoon-fed a career," he told the Glasgow Herald in 2005. "It was fully manufactured by a studio that believed it could put me on their posters and turn me into a product. ... I hadn't figured out properly how to act, and all of a sudden I was being thrown into these lead roles."

But Ledger was perhaps best known for his 2005 portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," about two cowboys who had a secret romantic relationship. The role earned him an Oscar nomination. "I felt that choices were being made for me, so I feel this has been my time now to find the good stories and test myself," Ledger told the Glasgow Herald in the 2005 interview. "It has been an interesting year, where I finally have a sense of accomplishment."

Asked how he felt about filming love scenes with another man, Ledger said he and his co-star Jake Gyllenhaal simply focused on their roles. "We can't say that we weren't nervous about it," Ledger told Oprah Winfrey in 2006. "But once the first take was over, it's like, 'OK. So what? It's kissing another human being. How are we going to finish this scene? Let's get on with it and let's get out of here.' "

In a written statement, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said it mourns Ledger's death, adding that his portrayal of Del Mar "changed hearts and minds in immeasurable ways."

Ledger has a daughter, Matilda Rose, born in 2005 to his then-girlfriend, Michelle Williams, who played his on-screen wife, Alma, in "Brokeback Mountain." The couple have since separated.

"He was just so respected in the industry," said Kim Serafin, senior editor of In Touch Weekly. "It's just horribly tragic. He was just a fine actor and a good person, so this is horribly sad and very unexpected."

COMMENTS (7/31/08): Well you can't say Montgomery Clift without the "Cliff" and you can't say Heath Ledger without the "Ledge." Bet ol' Heath didn't suspect he'd fall off the ledge and be one more name added to the ledger. Whoo hoo hoo! ... that is some story ain't it, the joker being naked and all, and there is a Batman curse that has plagued so many people since Dark Knight was made, even on the set of the filming I am told.

As comedian George Carlin found out in June, this is turning out to be a bad year for jokers. Maybe it would be best for all of us if we coughed or farted every time we have an urge to laugh. Gotta go now, I've only got four minutes till the next show! Whoo hoo hoo!
