NOTE ABOUT BLUE ALERT SYSTEM (3/11/03): Some of you may recall a few years back when I used "name blends" -- rhyming sounds and off-rhyme clues from part of one name to determine what the next name in the sequence might be (or later in the year). An example was the death of Layne Stahley and how "Layne" led to "Lynne" then "Linda" and the car crash death of Linda Lovelace which followed. I surmised that "Lace" in "Lovelace" might lead to a "Leese" then "Lisa" tragedy. The next day, Lisa Lopes of TLC was killed in a car crash.
Rather than create a whole other section on this page for name blends, I will instead highlight certain names in the lists below in light blue that I feel may be influenced by celebrity deaths that have occurred this year.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON EXCLUSIONS (1/23/04): We acknowledge the passing of dancer and actress Ann Miller, age 81, and note with great regret the passing of Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo), age 76. However, it is no longer the mission of this website to address the deaths of celebrities who are of advanced age or those who have had a long term health problem and are in their early elderly years. Such deaths are largely inevitable and often beyond any purposeful prediction. Also, the one and only applicable sound in Mr Keeshan's name ("eeeee") we now consider to be far too common to be remarkable or in any way useful for predictive purposes. Ergo, save for certain celebrities of advanced or elderly age who may appear on the prediction lists, we will no longer be publishing their obituaries and including comments.
It is, after all, premature death that we are most concerned about.
Prominent name sounds must also be present. "Ray", for example, is a prominent sound, "Ay", on the other hand, is not. This distinction will become more clear as we progress through the year.
UPDATE (1/5/06): Despite a large number of correct "hits" (deaths and mishaps) on my part, most of these were "mishaps." Deaths in 2005 were largely a surprise, tragic, or completely unexpected as was the case of ABC news anchor Peter Jennings and comedian Richard Pryor.
So, this is how things appeared on the main Celebrity Deaths and Mishaps page as the year 2005 came to a close.
Pop star Michael Jackson falling ill was no surprise; but that he survived the year was. Continued trouble for Kurt Cobain widow, Hole singer, and sometimes actress Courtney Love was something one could (and can) almost plan on.
However, with the "Elvis Presley scenario" potentially affecting major rock stars, and the "Lee" sound quite prominent from Elvis Presley (1977) and Lee Remick (1991), I was correct in anticipating some sort of major trouble, illness or death, for singer Kylie Minogue who is now fighting breast cancer. Likewise, the "Dee" sound in Andy Kaufman (1984) and John F. Kennedy (1963) practically placed the name of actress Sandra Dee up in lights ... for the last time.
As for older stars above the age of 70, those few celebrities of advanced or elderly age who did appear on the prediction lists, Johnny Carson and Shelley Winters were correctly deduced using the prevailing name sounds from John F. Kennedy and Lee Remick. Ms Winters fortunately survived.
Sounds extracted from the name Freddie Mercury (1991) produced the largest number of deaths and mishaps (13) with Andy Kaufmann coming in at a distinct second (12). I would have expected Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix (1970), or Janis Joplin (1970) to produce the largest results, but this was not the case.
As last year, I am encouraged with the results this year. I continued to use less names in the prediction lists, and had a new record number of correct results. Also, once again, not as many name sounds appeared as in years past and only the most important and relevent ones were used.
One of the major trends one could not help but notice, so "in your face" was it, was the large number of suicides and suicide attempts. Most of them did appear on this page due to the name sounds, although some didn't. None appeared on the prediction lists, however.
Neverthless, I fully expected to see this phenomenon, due almost completely to the Sylvia Plath (1963) influence. Although very few celebrities appeared linked to her name sounds, her influence was extremely powerful. I anticipated this would happen because it had been so very long since the last time so many suicides appeared in the same year, that this 1963 phenomenon was long overdue.
The vast majority of the victims were women, as were Sylvia Plath and Inger Stevens (1970), save three men: Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, boxer Najai Turpin, and journalist and book author Hunter S. Thompson.
And something else, which I focused a lot of attention on: nearly all of the "successful" female suicides were hangings! Looking back over past years, I see the phenomenon of multiple hangings in a given year has occurred largely, almost exclusively, with males. The only singular female cases in nearly twenty years (one case in a year) were those of opera star Jenny Grahn (2001), Nafisa Joseph (2004), and porn actress Nancee Kellee (1991).
This year was perhaps the first year ever that so many women chose this manner to take their lives.
The number of female hanging suicides was actually quite frightening. Six high profile cases, most sensational being that of actress Lee Eun-ju, and two other cases that were suspicious enough but the full reports were withheld. The number of males who hanged themselves were only two in number, but adding to the entire phenomenon, they brought the total hanged to ten. That is scary.
This total does not include the number of suicides from shootings, self-immolation (burning), and overdoses.
Thus, without question, the main influence of 2005 was, without question, Sylvia Plath (even though the method she chose was asphyxiation via cooking gas).
And speaking of cooking gas, the number of suicides in the general population of Japan resulting from charcoal burners in cars, vans, and SUVs was a major news story. So, too, were the number of hangings, again largely women, in the general populations of the US and UK (and of course India where there seems to be an epidemic of them).
One other story that made the news on the 42nd anniversary of Sylvia Plath's suicide, February 11, was the infamous Valentine's Day Mass Suicide being planned on Internet chatrooms by a deranged 25-year-old man. There were at least four women seriously considering following through with a scheme for mass hanging at a location of this man's choosing; however the authorities captured him before the day arrived. The total victims, had this event occurred, would have been 39, 38 of them women. This would have made Heaven's Gate seem a bit less weird than it was by comparison.
So, the top influence for death among everyone worldwide ... the famous, the not-so-famous, the private citizen, and yes, even those crazy suicide-bombers out there ... was poet Sylvia Plath! A special black wreath is being designed to lay at her grave as an award even as I speak.
What a year!
As for other predictions I made using the base 7 system on the 2005 pages, and the celebrities that nearly fulfilled them who also appeared on the name sound prediction lists, Eminem nearly OD'd with sleeping pills into Elvis heaven, country singer Mindy McCready twice almost did a Janis Joplin reprise, and Paris Hilton, much to to the disappointment of many, came close but failed to die in a paparazzi-chasing car crash like Princess Diana.
Again, I feel the clues were there in much greater abundance than in previous years, and I did call an amazing number of mishaps and deaths dealing with those celebrities I am familiar with. But there were many who passed this way I had never heard of, but whose name sounds matched nevertheless.
Still, I do believe this system can be further refined. I need to hear about the popular young people I am overlooking because I am not familiar with them. After all, I am not in my 20s or even my 30s anymore.
Any celebrity events that occur, if any, until I have the new page set up, will be dealt with retroactively (if necessary).

Michael Jackson treated in emergency room
9:46 p.m.,
Sunday, June 5, 2005
SOLVANG, Calif. Associated Press -- Michael Jackson was taken to an emergency room Sunday for treatment of a back problem that has plagued him throughout his molestation trial, a spokeswoman said.
Jackson, accompanied by a bodyguard, arrived at the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital about five miles from his Neverland ranch at about 2:30 p.m., spokeswoman Raymone K. Bain said. "Mr. Jackson's back has spurred up on him again," Bain said. "It's pretty serious. It was serious enough for him to come over here." Bain said stress contributed to the entertainer's back problem. "He's under a tremendous amount of stress right now," she said at an impromptu news conference outside the hospital. "Other than his back, he is doing fine."
Jackson's health has been an issue throughout the trial. The 46-year-old pop star appeared gaunt in recent days, and officials at the hospital disclosed Friday that he had visited the emergency room overnight.
Jackson's case was twice previously interrupted by hospital visits, once for treatment of flu symptoms. He first reported a back problem in early March, when he went to an emergency room on one of the days his accuser took the stand. Jackson arrived late, dressed in pajama bottoms, after the judge ordered him to come to court.
The singer is charged with molesting a 13-year-old boy in February or March 2003. He is also accused of plying him with wine and conspiring to hold his family captive.
The jury received Jackson's case Friday afternoon and deliberated for about two hours before adjourning for the weekend. They will resume discussions Monday. Bain said Jackson planned to return to his family at Neverland when he is released from the hospital to wait for the verdict. "His mother is a rock of Gibraltar. So is his father," she said.
Also Sunday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said in an interview that he has arrived in the area to meet with Jackson. "I talk to him almost every day, and we have prayer," he said. "We are going to be in prayer as we watch and wait."
COMMENTS (6/7/05): Michael Jackson is named in the prediction list above. He is also a potential candidate for repeating the tragic Elvis Presley scenario this year. As can be seen in the photo above, contrary to evidence and testimony suggesting he exclusively likes young boys, we see him here with two teenage female fans. What does it mean? Publicity shot? Or is there a campaign to smear Michael Jackson because he is "eccentric." If he lived outside the US, he'd be left alone. But in America, eccentric behaviour is discouraged and demonised. Then again, maybe he really is a creeper and a pederast. If so, he'll get what he deserves. Guess only he knows for sure, but who among us can judge?
Tearful Courtney Love ordered into rehab facility for July drugs overdose
Aug 19, 2005 3:41 PM
US/Eastern
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A judge ordered a tearful Courtney Love into an in-patient substance abuse facility on Friday after the troubled rock singer admitted to violating the terms of her probation by using drugs. Love broke down in quiet sobs as Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rand Rubin warned that he was prepared to send her to jail because he felt she needed "to hit rock bottom" before she was ready to overcome her drug addiction.
But Rubin said the performer's lawyers persuaded him to give her one more chance to avoid incarceration by placing her immediately into a "chemical dependency center." "I'm convinced that you need either a long-term (treatment) program or a long-term stay in the county jail," Rubin said.
After regaining her composure, the 41-year-old former singer of the band Hole and widow of Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain was ushered out of the courthouse by sheriff's deputies and her lawyers without speaking to reporters.
The judge ordered Love to return to court on September 16 to review her progress and levy a sentence for her probation violation, which stems from an incident last month in which Love was taken by ambulance from the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel to a hospital. Love's representatives said at the time that she had merely felt faint, but city fire officials said they were responding to a report of a drug overdose. Police said a crime report was taken that night under the name of "Courtney L."
In court papers, prosecutors said only that the singer had been under the influence of a "controlled substance." But Deputy District Attorney Gina Satriano has told reporters the allegation involved "some sort of narcotic." Love's attorney, Howard Weitzman, acknowledged to reporters that his client has suffered a "relapse" but was determined to "move forward" in her recovery.
Satriano said the judge could impose further probation conditions on Love, and up to a year in jail, when she returns to court next month. In the meantime, Love will remain at an undisclosed residential treatment facility. She previously had been ordered to undergo out-patient drug rehabilitation in connection with two previous drug cases.
She entered guilty pleas in May 2004 and in February of this year to separate charges of being under the influence of cocaine and illegal possession of the painkiller oxycodone. She also pleaded no contest in February to a misdemeanor assault charge for attacking a woman at the home of her ex-boyfriend last April. In October of 2004, she pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for hitting a man in the head with a microphone stand at a New York nightclub. Until now, she has received no jail time in any of those cases.

Cameron Diaz Rushed to Hospital After Fall
MediaGab
Sunday, March 13, 2005 at 7:52 AM
Cameron Diaz has been taken to
hospital needing several stitches in her head after falling from
a chest of drawers. The actress was reaching above a wardrobe when
she tumbled at her home in Hollywood Hills.
Her pop star boyfriend Justin Timberlake heard the crash and found her unconscious on their bedroom floor, bleeding badly from a head wound.
The Charlie's Angels star was rushed to hospital, received nineteen stitches and was treated for back strain. A friend of the couple as saying: "Justin was frantic with worry. Cameron was out cold and covered in blood from her head wound."
The couple had just returned from a camping trip in South Africa.
It appears Cameron was packing their gear back on top of the wardrobe, struggled to reach up and overbalanced after climbing on a chest of drawers.
Cameron's in good hands with Justin
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Saturday, March 12, 2005
Cameron Diaz was dazed and confused
recently, but not over how in the heck she ended up with pop star
Justin Timberlake who is eight years her junior ...
Diaz took a dangerous fall in her Hollywood Hills manse, reports London's Sun tab, attempting to pack their camping gear atop a wardrobe when she slipped and tumbled to the floor, leaving the "Charlie's Angels" actress unconscious with a back injury and a serious cut to the head.
Timberlake, downstairs at the time, rushed upstairs at the crashing sound in the bedroom. "Justin was frantic with worry," a friend related. "Cameron was passed out cold and covered in blood from her head wound. He was freaked out. He managed to bring her round by talking to her and holding her, but she couldn't move."
Medics summoned to the scene initially thought Diaz may have broken her back, but it turned out to be badly strained. The cut on her head required 19 stitches.
Timberlake proved himself much more valuable in this form of "wardrobe malfunction" than in the Janet Jackson kind. He not only comforted Diaz in the aftermath of her accident, he stayed by her side and held her hand during the ambulance rush to the hospital. Diaz recuperated at home following the accident, then accompanied Timberlake to Vegas, where he is filming a music video with Snoop Dogg.
The lesson for us mere mortals in the Diaz accident? Do not try this at home. Climbing exercises should not be attempted alone, whether atop a wardrobe on even a stepladder.
Falls are the most common cause of serious injuries in the home, reports Mercola.com, a health Web site. Household injuries are no laughing matter; they result in 20,000 deaths and 13 million injuries every year, second only to accidents with motor vehicles.
Climbing a wardrobe alone could be one's very last act.
COMMENT (3/17/05): Cameron Diaz is named in the code blue alert above.
US rap star Cam'ron shot in arms
BBC NEWS
Monday, 24 October 2005, 08:04 GMT 09:04 UK
US rapper Cam'ron needed hospital treatment after being shot in a botched attempt to steal his car.
The singer, 29, was taken to hospital in Washington DC after a man attempted to steal his sports car at a traffic light in the early hours of Sunday. A spokeswoman for his label, Diplomat Records, said the gunman fired a single shot that passed through both of Cam'ron's arms.
His hits include Let Me Know and he has appeared in films such as Paid In Full.
The rapper, whose real name is Cameron Giles, got his early break through his friendship with the late Notorious BIG, who was killed on a street in Los Angeles in March 1997, after seven shots were fired into his vehicle.
Cam'ron's debut album, Confessions of Fire made the US top 10 in 2001. Hit producer and singer Kanye West worked on Cam'ron's most recent album, Purple Haze, which was released last year. His hit singles in the US R&B chart have included 3-5-7, Feels Good and Horse and Carriage.

Kylie's cancer shock ends tour

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Australian pop
star Kylie
Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 2004
Grammy winner, who turns 37 on May 28, will undergo immediate
treatment and has postponed her upcoming Australian tour,
according to a statement released by her promoters in Australia
on Tuesday.
"I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl tour to Australian audiences," Minogue said in the statement. "I am sorry to have disappointed my fans. Nevertheless, hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon," she said in the statement, released by The Frontier Touring Company.Minogue's management said she had been staying in Melbourne with her family this week when she was diagnosed with the illness.
Her spectacular Showgirl tour, which has already played in Europe, was scheduled to tour Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth over the next month. Minogue's promoter Michael Gudinski said he wished her the speediest of recoveries. Ticket holders have been told to await an announcement of new Showgirl dates.
Minogue began her Showgirl world tour with a concert in Glasgow in March. After Australia, the singer was also due to give concerts in Singapore and Hong Kong before returning to the UK for a headline appearance at the Glastonbury Festival on June 26.
Minogue's entertainment career began to take off in the mid-1980s when she appeared in the long-running Australian televison program Neighbours as Charlene, the "girl next door". Over the years she moved through a variety of singing styles and became hugely popular in the UK, Europe and Asia for hits such as "Spinning Around" and "Can't Get You Out of My Head". She was also one of the artists to perform at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and won a U.S. Grammy award in 2004 for best dance recording.

Samsung heiress Lee Yoon-hyung death 'a suicide'
Monday, November 28, 2005 Posted: 0911 GMT (1711 HKT)
SEOUL, South Korea
(Reuters) -- Lee Yoon-hyung, an heiress to the
wealthy family that controls South Korea's Samsung Group, has
committed suicide at the age of 26, a company official said on
Monday.
As with most things related to the secretive family that controls huge swathes of the country's business, the unfolding story of her death, with more than a hint of mystery, has gripped South Korea.
Last week, newspapers ran front-page articles saying Lee the youngest daughter of Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee, died in a traffic accident in New York, where she was attending graduate school.
But on Monday papers reported Lee had hanged herself with an electrical cord at her New York apartment, citing local police and medical examiners' reports.
Samsung spokesman Yim Jun-seok confirmed that Lee's death was a suicide. "At the time the story initially broke, we had an insufficient amount of information," he said by telephone. After later learning about the actual cause of death, company officials did not correct initial reports out of respect for the family and due to the personal nature of the episode, he added. "It was a tragic incident and the family was already suffering from it."
The heiress once enjoyed
popularity in South Korea when she started a personal Web site
called "Pretty Yoon-hyung" that described what is was
like to be a daughter in a family that ran the country's top
conglomerate. Lee shared her father's passion for fast cars and
was working to increase her knowledge of art in order to help run
Samsung's cultural foundation, local media reported.
But newspapers speculated Lee, a graduate student at New York University, may have been suffering from depression. Lee had shares in company affiliates worth about 179 billion won ($171.9 million), according to Medias Equitables, an Internet site that provides information on individual shareholders.
The suicide
comes at a difficult time for the family of the Samsung Group,
which had combined sales of 135.5 trillion won in 2004,
equivalent to more than one-sixth of South Korea's annual gross
domestic product ...
COMMENTS (12/10/05): As they say, sometimes destiny is found writ' in the name. Lee Yoon-HYUNG was indeed found well "hung."

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ashlee Simpson collapsed following a performance in Tokyo and has been hospitalized.
The 21-year-old singer on Thursday had just performed her single, "Boyfriend" for MTV Japan, when she told the audience she felt sick and said to them, "I love you guys," Us Weekly reported Friday. She then collapsed in an elevator and was rushed by ambulance to a hospital.
Her representative, Rob Shuter, confirmed the report to The Associated Press, but would not give further details or provide Simpson's condition.
Simpson, the younger sister of Jessica Simpson, has been touring to support her sophomore album, "I Am Me." She infamously was caught lip-synching her "Saturday Night Live" performance in October 2004.
Her upcoming appearance at the Radio Music Awards on Monday has been canceled.

Reese Witherspoon Attacked By Paparazzi
TIMES OF INDIA
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 07, 2005 02:39:56 PM
Reese Witherspoon has become the latest star caught up in an alleged paparazzi attack after one photographer assaulted two men while attempting to photograph the actress and her kids. The Legally blonde star was enjoying a day out at Disney's California Adventure theme park in Anaheim on Friday when she was confronted with an "aggressive and frightening" photographer. As park employees attempted to move Witherspoon to a safer area, the snapper allegedly assaulted two park employees, prompting security to call the police. The photographer, Todd Wallace, was cited for two misdemeanour counts of assault and battery and will appear in court next month. Witherspoon recently lost a court battle with a group of paparazzi she claimed "besieged" her in April. The actress alleged false imprisonment claiming photographers blocked her car, so she couldn't drive off after working out at a Los Angeles gym.
COMMENTS (9/8/05): Reese Witherspoon is named in the prediction list above.

Actress Sandra Dee dies
Death follows treatment for kidney disease, pneumonia
Sunday, February 20, 2005 Posted: 2211 GMT (0611
HKT)
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actress Sandra Dee died Sunday at a California hospital, her son told CNN.
Dodd Darin, the son of the late singer Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, said his mother died at 6 a.m. (9 a.m. ET) in Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, California, where she had been treated for 14 days for complications from kidney disease and pneumonia.
Darin said his mother was 63, though a number of movie Web sites put her birth date variously at April 23, 1942, and April 23, 1944, which would have made her 62 or 60.
Dee was born Alexandra Zuck in Bayonne, New Jersey. Her mother often lied about her age to help her get ahead in work and school, according to the Web site Internet Movie Database.
Work as a model by age 12 led to television commercials and, at age 14, a role in the movie "Until They Sailed," which was released in 1957, the site said. The next year she was signed to "The Reluctant Debutante" and "The Restless Years."
In 1959, the teenage heartthrob won roles in five productions. "Gidget" and "A Summer Place" proved the most popular.
In 1960, she appeared in "Portrait in Black" and married Darin. In rapid succession came roles in "Come September," "Romanoff and Juliet," "Tammy Tell Me True" and its 1963 sequel, "Tammy and the Doctor."
But the latter films fared poorly and the offers began to wane. For the next few years, she did one movie per year: "I'd Rather be Rich" in 1964, "That Funny Feeling" in 1965, "A Man Could Get Killed" in 1966, "Doctor, You've Got to be Kidding" in 1967 -- the year she and Darin divorced -- and "Rosie!" in 1968.
Her movie career was largely finished by the time she was 26, according to the Web site's biography.
In 1970, Sandra won a role in "The Dunwich Horror" and, during that decade, made four television movies.
As her star diminished, she battled anorexia, alcoholism and depression, the Web site says.
Her last film, "Lost," was produced in 1983.
Dee was diagnosed with throat cancer and kidney failure in 2000. She is survived by her son and two granddaughters, Alexa and Olivia, according to the Web site.
She was portrayed by actress Kate Bosworth last year in "Beyond the Sea," which starred Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin.
COMMENT (2/21/05): Sandra Dee is named in the prediction list above.
Anna Kournikova Alledgedly Stalked By Naked Swimmer
Female First
February 9, 2005, 6:18:19
A homeless man has been charged with stalking ANNA KOURNIKOVA, after allegedly swimming nude across Florida's Biscayne Bay searching for tennis star's home.
WILLIAM LEPESKA, 40, was arrested on 30 January (05) in Miami Beach after he allegedly swam 200 yards in a hunt for Kournikova's $5 million (£2.6 million) waterfront home.
The man was arrested after he got out of the water and ended up in a neighbour's pool area three houses down. Police say Lepeska screamed, "Anna! Save me!" as he was taken away.
Lepeska, who has 'Anna' tattooed on his right arm, was hostile at the police station and was subdued with pepper spray and a baton, say police.
Lepeska allegedly bombarded the Russian stunner with letters and emails and "made several alarming statements" indicating he believed the tennis star was expecting him, according to police.
A publicist for Kournikova says, "(The incident) had caused Anna to be very concerned and fearful for her safety."
He also was charged with exposing himself in the presence of a child after the young daughter of another neighbour saw Lepeska laying in a "very lewd manner" by the pool.
A Miami-Dade County Court judge issued a restraining order against Lepeska, who is currently being held in lieu of $26,000 (£13,684) bail. He is due back in court today (09FEB05).
COMMENT (3/9/05): Anna Kournikova is named in the prediction list above.
Anna Kournikova's Stalker Told to Stay Away
FashionGates.com
February 25 2005
A homeless man accused of stalking Anna Kournikova has been ordered to stay at least 1,000 feet from the Russian tennis star, if he ever gets out if jail. 40-year-old William Lepeska, who has a history of mental illness and is being held at the psychiatric unit of a Miami jail, is charged of stalking the famous blonde after he allegedly swam naked toward her $5 million Miami Beach estate last month. The accused was arrested when he got onto the pool deck at the wrong house and started shouting, "Anna! Save me!", reported AP.
"I was absolutely shocked and fearful, and I was very much concerned for my safety. It was very frightening and scary just knowing there is someone out there who's obsessive," said Kournikova at a pre-trail hearing.
The 23-year-old Russian athlete and model sought a civil restraining order, claiming Lepeska bombarded her with sexually explicit letters and e-mails. In one letter, Lepeska, who has "Anna" tattooed on his right bicep and once followed Kournikova across America to Los Angeles, where she was making a charity appearance, explained that if they "were lovers we would have no need for other people, food or water," according to court papers. "I thought Anna possibly had some sincere regard for me," he said. "I had all sorts of delusional assumptions about Anna."
Lepeska, who represented himself, told the court he had previously been obsessed with Mel B of the Spice Girls for five years, "but finally I said the heck with her, moving on to greener pastures".
The man faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of two counts of battery on police officers, resisting arrest and burglary. He also has a history of previous imprisonment for stabbing a man who was sleeping in a university student union coffee house and telling police he was "a slave to an evil that he could not escape" in 1995.
Frightened Kournikova said she had to hire bodyguards for the first time and add security at her home. The star was previously approached by a female stalker during a practice session in 2002, but the woman was intercepted by security guards.
Nancy Grace Stalker Case
TV host sues wacko who sought
Osama bin Laden introduction
The Smoking Gun
DECEMBER 14, 2005--Forget Scott Peterson and Michael Jackson, there's a defendant Nancy Grace dislikes even more. His name is Joseph Raymond Loegering and the cable TV star has just sued the Missouri man, claiming he has been stalking and harassing her at CNN's New York office. According to the Headline News host's December 13 New York State Supreme Court complaint, Loegering, 48, allegedly believes that, among other things, Grace can "solve all of his problems and will help him to meet with Osama bin Laden." While many unkind things have been said about the brash Grace, we've never seen her convincingly linked to al Qaeda. Loegering, who the complaint says "is obsessed with Grace and CNN," has been bunking in a Manhattan psychiatric ward since December 2, when he tried to enter the network's Columbus Circle digs.
Last month, he posted a message in an online chat room referring to Grace as his "Queen of Queens" and included her in a list of CNN "cuties" with whom, "I want Babies, so adopt my Son From the loins of Judah, and lets have some fun." Grace, who also hosts a program on Court TV (which happens to own this estimable operation), is seeking a protective order against Loegering, punitive damages, and reimbursement of her legal fees.

Character actor Vincent Schiavelli dead
'Ghost,' 'Cuckoo's Nest' actor claimed by lung cancer
Monday, December 26, 2005 Posted: 1813 GMT (0213 HKT)
ROME, Italy (AP) --
Droopy-eyed character actor Vincent Schiavelli, who appeared in scores
of movies, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
and "Ghost," died Monday at his home in Sicily. He was
57. He died of lung cancer, said Salvatore Glorioso, mayor of
Polizzi Generosa, the Sicilian village where Schiavelli resided.
Schiavelli, whose gloomy look made him perfect to play creepy or eccentric characters, made appearances in some 150 film and television productions, according to the Internet Movie Database. Among the movies: "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Amadeus," "Batman Returns," and "The People vs. Larry Flynt."
He was selected in 1997 by Vanity Fair as one of America's best character actors.
Schiavelli, who was born and raised in New York, studied acting at New York University's School of the Arts. He also wrote three cookbooks and many food articles for magazines and newspapers, possibly inheriting his love for cooking from his grandfather, who had been a cook for an Italian baron before moving to the United States, according to IMDb.
"He was a great friend, a great chef and a great talker," Glorioso, who has known Schiavelli for almost four years, said in a telephone interview. "With a smooth, witty conversation, he would make everything look more colorful. I've lost a brother," he said.
Schiavelli also had worked in Italy, including in 2001 when he directed a theater piece in Sicily based on nine fables.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday in Polizzi Generosa, Glorioso said.
COMMENTS (12/29/05): This is most unfortunate. 57 is much too young to die. Mr Schiavelli was a great character actor, along with several others from the original One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest cast. He seemed like a nice person, and there is no doubt he will be missed by many fans who will wonder about the potential roles he might have played over the next one or two decades had he lived.

Wendie Jo Sperber dead of cancer
Thursday, December 1, 2005 Posted: 1622 GMT (0022 HKT)
LOS ANGELES, California
(AP) -- Actress Wendie Jo Sperber, who starred opposite
Tom Hanks on TV's "Bosom Buddies" and who in his words
became "a walking inspiration" after she contracted
cancer, has died. She was in her 40s. Sperber died at home
Tuesday after an eight-year battle with breast cancer, publicist
Jo-Ann Geffen said Wednesday.
A Los Angeles native, Sperber appeared in dozens of television shows and movies, including the first and third "Back to the Future" films. Her publicist first said Sperber was 46, but later said she was 43 based on an Internet resource. The Associated Press in September reported Sperber's age as 47.
Sperber also had roles in Steven Spielberg's "1941," Robert Zemeckis' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," and Neal Israel's "Moving Violations" and "Bachelor Party." Her television credits include "Murphy Brown," "Private Benjamin," "Will & Grace" and "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter."
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, the actress became an advocate for cancer care. In 2001, she founded the weSPARK Cancer Support Center, which provides free emotional support, information and social activities for individuals and families affected by cancer. Sperber helped unveil and promote a breast cancer stamp for the U.S. Postal Service in 1998, Geffen said.
"The memory of Wendie Jo is that of a walking inspiration," Hanks said in a statement. "She met the challenges of her illness with love, cheer, joy and altruism. We are going to miss her as surely as we are all better for knowing her."
Sperber is survived by a son and daughter, her parents, two sisters and a brother.

Olivia Newton-John in plea to find missing beau
Man last seen boarding a fishing vessel in California
Tuesday, August 23, 2005 Posted: 1149 GMT (1949 HKT)
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) --
Australian songstress Olivia Newton-John has urged anyone with
information on the whereabouts of her longtime boyfriend to
"please, please come forward." Patrick Kim McDermott
has been missing since June 30 when he went on an overnight
fishing trip and never returned. "I'm hopeful that my
treasured friend is safe and well, and I'm grateful to the
officials who are working so hard to find Patrick, whom I love
very much," the singer and actress said in a written
statement. "I ask anybody with information that could help
to please, please come forward."
Newton-John spokesman Gavin de Becker said the Grammy award winning singer was "extremely concerned" about the whereabouts of McDermott, 48, and was staying in close touch with his family, as well as authorities. The United States Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the matter and anyone with information is urged to call 310-732-7344. "Right now, it's being looked at as a missing person's case, and nothing else is deviant from that," Coast Guard spokesman Scott Epperson told reporters.
According to the Coast
Guard, McDermott told friends that he was going on an overnight
fishing trip on a sport fishing vessel on June 30. He was last
seen aboard that vessel, which left from San Pedro Harbor south
of Los Angeles. "When McDermott failed to show up at a
family event July 6, his family became concerned," a Coast
Guard statement said.
The family found his vehicle in the parking lot of the San Pedro marina on July 11. "His personal items were also still on the sport fishing vessel. The family contacted the Coast Guard immediately after this discovery," according to the statement.
Newton-John has been dating McDermott, a cameraman, for nine years. The Coast Guard is not ruling out the possibility of foul play but concede they have few leads.
Newton-John, 56, shot to fame in the 1970s as a middle-of-the road artist but really cemented her place in the pop pantheon with her appearance as "Sandy" in the 1978 movie "Grease," playing opposite John Travolta. McDermott's link to Newton-John was made public by the police on Sunday in a bid to generate media exposure that in turn could unearth new leads.
COMMENTS (9/6/05): Olivia Newton-John is named in the prediction list above.

Paris Hilton might love the limelight but her boyfriend's attempts to avoid the paparazzi appear to have caused him to crash Hilton's $300,000 Bentley last night.
After a evening spent partying at an LA nightclub with friends including Kimberly Stewart, Greek millionaire Stavros Niarchos tried drive away in Hilton's sportscar while covering his face with his jacket.
TV footage shows the unsighted Niarchos gunning it straight into a parked truck in the club's parking lot. As he reverses, pictures show a nasty gash across the bonnet of the Bentley Continental GT.
After being questioned by police, a distraught Niarchos reportedly walked off with paparazzi in tow leaving Paris and friends behind. Photographers at the scene said he then tried to outrun them. "He went off on a mad dash and jumps a fence approximately eight-feet high," one said.
Niarchos eventually returned to the car and the couple drove off.
Last month, Hilton confirmed her new relationship with Niarchos, Mary-Kate Olsen's ex-boyfriend. The socialite called off her engagement to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis just weeks earlier.

Johnny Carson, late-night TV legend, dies at 79
Sunday, January 23, 2005 Posted: 2223 GMT (0623 HKT)
(CNN) -- Johnny Carson, host of NBC's "The
Tonight Show" for nearly 30 years, died Sunday of emphysema.
"He passed away this morning," Carson's nephew, Jeffrey
Sotzing, told CNN. Carson, a longtime smoker, was 79 and had
announced in 2002 that he was suffering from the disease.
Carson was host of the late-night talk show from October 1, 1962, to May 22, 1992, taking over from Jack Paar and handing off to Jay Leno. "The Carson show changed your life," comedian Joan Rivers said. "If Carson liked you, you were set. He got the bright comics. He picked the ones who were different, who were smart."
Born John William Carson on October 23, 1925, in Corning, Iowa, he is survived by his fourth wife, Alexis, and sons Christopher and Cory from his first marriage, to Joan "Jody" Wolcott. Another son, Richard, died in a car accident in 1991.
Despite decades on television, Carson was never open publicly with the details of his personal life. "Nobody knew him," said Rivers, who often substituted for Carson as a "Tonight Show" guest host. "He was very private."
Carson began his show business career as a teenage magician and ventriloquist before serving in the Navy during World War II. After the Navy, he attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor of arts degree.
While still in college, Carson took a job as an announcer with KFAB in Lincoln, Nebraska, and two years later moved to Los Angeles, California, where he took an announcer's job at KNXT-TV.
A year later, the boyish-looking budding comedian had his own show -- "Carson's Cellar" -- 15 minutes of poking fun at the news, on which Carson persuaded stars of the 1940s and 1950s to appear for free. In the midst of the show's run, famed clown Red Skelton hired Carson as a writer -- and even put him on as host on live television when Skelton was injured during a rehearsal.
"The Johnny Carson Show" spent 39 weeks on CBS in 1955 and 1956, then he moved to New York, where he was host of ABC's quiz show "Who Do You Trust?" and met Ed McMahon, who became Carson's sidekick until Carson retired from "The Tonight Show" 35 years later.
Under Carson, "The Tonight Show" earned 42 Emmy nominations and won seven trophies. Carson picked up a Golden Globe nomination in 1975, three years after moving the show from New York to Hollywood.
Carson was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1987. An estimated 50 million people watched his final broadcast in 1992. "And so it has come to this. I am one of the lucky people in the world. I found something that I always wanted to do and I have enjoyed every single minute of it," Carson said to close his final show. "I bid you a very heartfelt goodnight."
COMMENTS (1/23/05): Johnny Carson is named in the prediction list above.
'West Wing' actor John Spencer dies at 58

LOS ANGELES, California
(AP) -- John Spencer, who played a dedicated politico on
"The West Wing" who survived a serious illness to run
for vice president, died of a heart attack Friday, his publicist
said. Spencer, 58, died at a Los Angeles hospital, said publicist
Ron Hofmann. He would have been 59 next week.
Spencer played Leo McGarry, the chief of staff to President Jeb Bartlet (Martin Sheen) through the first few seasons of the NBC series. In a sad parallel to life, his character suffered a heart attack that forced him to give up his White House job.
The character recovered and was picked as a running mate for Democratic presidential contender Matt Santos, played by Jimmy Smits; the campaign has been a central theme this season for the drama.
Spencer, who also starred on "L.A. Law" as attorney Tommy Mullaney, received an Emmy Award for his performance on "The West Wing" in 2002 and was nominated four other times for the drama.
The actor mirrored his character in several ways: both were recovering alcoholics and both, Spencer once said, were driven. "Like Leo, I've always been a workaholic, too," he told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview. "Through good times and bad, acting has been my escape, my joy, my nourishment. The drug for me, even better than alcohol, was acting."
Spencer grew up in Paterson, New Jersey, the son of blue-collar parents. With his enrollment at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan, he was sharing classes with the likes of Liza Minnelli and budding violinist Pinchas Zukerman.
As a teenager, Spencer landed a recurring role on "The Patty Duke Show" as the boyfriend of English twin Cathy. Stage and film work followed. Then his big break: playing Harrison Ford's detective sidekick in the 1990 courtroom thriller "Presumed Innocent." That role led to his hiring for the final four years of "L.A. Law."
Service and funeral arrangements were pending, Hofmann said.
| No Photo | Jane Seymour (d. 1956) |
Possible predictions (1/8/05): Jane Seymour. Because she was such a minor actress, indeed, I cannot find a photograph of her although her filmography is somewhat extensive, I do not think her name sounds will hold danger for anyone else other than the modern actress of the same name, Jane Seymour. However, if other actresses named Jane begin to run into difficulty, or the "More" sound starts showing up, I'll reconsider. Additional predictions: (5/6/05): Jane Fonda (full name Jane Seymour Fonda).
